England in good position

England closed the second day of the second Test in Mumbai on 178-2 thanks to an unbeaten third-wicket stand of 110 between Alastair Cook (87 not out) and Kevin Pietersen (62 not out). The duo are set for a race to become the first to reach their 22nd Test hundred on day three, equalling the most scored by an England player. Cook carried on from where he left off in the first Test - when he scored 227 runs in total - while Pietersen put his first Test struggles behind him to reach an increasingly fluent half-century off 63 balls. India had earlier pushed their overnight 266-6 to 327 with the tourists finally getting Cheteshwar Pujara out after scores of 206 not out, 41 not out and 135 in the series so far. Ravichandran Ashwin (68) fell early but Harbhajan Singh (21) also contributed valuable runs on a pitch offering generous assistance to the spinners. Monty Panesar completed a five-wicket haul, finishing with 5-129, and Graeme Swann took 4-70. England's reply began with a couple of quirks - India becoming the first team since 1910 to open the first innings of a Test with two spinners and opener Cook hitting only his eighth six in his 85th Test appearance. Cook and Nick Compton put on 66 for the first wicket before Pragyan Ojha struck in successive overs. The slow left-armer first had Compton (29) caught at slip and then trapped Jonathan Trott on the back foot without scoring. Cook and Pietersen then ensured the touring side completed their best day of the series to day, trailing by 149 runs at the close.
